i need a little more ella in my life

for me, the new year brings the desire to cultivate
old hobbies that i have lost along the way
of being a student and becoming a wife.

and it makes me realize...
i'm dying to start singing again!
i fell in love with jazz vocals when i was a teenager,
and discovered amazing artists such as
ella fitzgerald
sarah vaughn
diana krall
lizz wright
and many, many others.

in high school i was part of a jazz combo
and studied theory & improvisation.
i also took private lessons and was part of a vocal jazz choir at my church
which was probably the most fun i've ever had singing in my life.

ella is absolutely my biggest inspiration,
and i spent many hours in my teens
lifting and learning her scat solos & trying to emulate the amazing way
her voice bounces around & is able to wiggle into tiny, tight little spaces.

i would love to be a part of a group like that again,
but i am exhausting myself trying to find
something i can join in vancouver!
i've searched online and in the local papers,
i've even looked for groups advertising on craigslist,
but no luck!

singing absolutely makes me feel more alive than almost anything...

so i guess i'll have to keep looking!

  1. Great post. I agree - Ella is such a great inspiration. This reminds me of how much I love female jazz vocalists too. I need to dig out some of my favorites and start listening more often!

  2. I have an alto voice with almost no hint of soprano and I think it would be so much fun to try Jazz singing. I may be wrong, but somehow it seems like Jazz songs usually have a deeper singer so maybe I would be good at it! :) I hope you find a group!

  5. I love listening to the jazz standards by Ella and all the others you listed. It's one of my favorite things to do at the end of the day when I'm making dinner. The music calms me, and if you can actually sing it (kudos to you!), I say you must find a class to get into it again!!
