weekend bliss.

{sparklesummer from here}
our weekends lately have been amazing blurs of afternoon naps, great food, lazy beach days, more great food (on sunny patios!), free shows (k'naan & nelly furtado, and deltron 3030 tonight!) and shopping (often at the farmer's market for delicious & great local food!)

summer has arrived in toronto, and i am determined that we're not going to waste a minute of it! we've wiped down our dusty balcony (which is already dusty again, thanks to living in the concrete jungle of downtown toronto) and definitely plan on re-instating cocktail hour at our house, at least one or two evenings a week.

on saturday mornings i wake to the blinding sun coming into our bedroom and jump out of bed before theo even gets the chance to bully me for cuddles, rushing off to check out the farmer's market. late spring is when the st. lawrence farmer's market becomes amazing... local asparagus, fiddleheads, and the first strawberries and raspberries of the season! i always make sure to stop by monforte dairy where i can chat with my new cheese-making friends about their latest creations, and where they are always eager to share a sample (or five, yay!) of their delicious cheeses. i wonder if they have gotten tired of me saying "now, i'm only allowed to spend $6 on cheese this week... what can i get?"

we've already had a few beach afternoons, and i'm glad to be able to swap my powder bronzer for sunscreen and a healthy glow. it feels so good to wiggle my toes in the sand, reclining on our makeshift beach blankets and oversized towels while we read novels and nap in the bright early summer sun. of course, along with beach days come the late afternoons spent on gorgeous restaurant patios, soaking up the last hours of warmth while we enjoy a late lunch/early dinner and a few pints of assorted yummy belgian whites, mill street lemontea, or dry apple cider on ice.

when we can resist the call of toronto's outdoor patio culture, we stay home and grill veggie burgers on our new electric grill sitting happily out on our very own balcony! we've become veggie burger connoisseurs, trying to find the best tasting and least processed ones on the market (any suggestions from you, dear readers, are more than welcome!) and topping them with yummy mixtures of aged goat cheddar & sauteed mushrooms, or avocado & roasted red peppers, or a million other combinations of delicious toppings we haven't even thought of yet...

it's not all fun and games though... i'm very sad to report that our lovely bikes were recently stolen (right out from the front of our building!) and we've really been noticing it lately - the walks to the beach seem so much longer when we see people zipping past on their bicycles! so this weekend, we tried out toronto's fun bike-sharing program called bixi... we took bikes out for a whole day and zipped around from kensington market to the antiques market to the beach. it was the best! i think we'll survive until we find two lovely new bikes to call our own.

how have you been spending your weekends lately? are you finding time to get outside?

  1. sounds like you're loving life right now!! I want some fresh produce from a farmer's market! I just got some watermelon and berries, but it seems I have to eat them in like 2 days before they go bad.:/

    1. haha yes i know what that's like :) actually if you swirl your berries in a vinegar & water solution, then rinse them, they should last a few days extra (kills mold spores). but mostly if we buy berries at the saturday morning market, we'll eat them or i'll use them in a recipe on the weekend!

  2. ugh horrible news about the bikes!

    Have you tried the veggie burger recipe from Oh She Glows? it's my all time favorite...not mushy like bean based ones. it's kind of ingredient heavy but make a big batch and freeze them! http://ohsheglows.com/recipage/?recipe_id=6002223

    When I'm lazy (aka most of the time) my favorite processed veg burgers are Morning Star garden patties. I have to put them in the toaster oven to prevent mushiness though.

  5. Your summer sounds like a dream! I didn't realize you live in downtown Toronto, that is so fun. Especially in the summer! There was so much going on there when we visited for our anniversary a couple years ago. Glad you found a bike-swapping program in the meantime - that is so cool! I bought hubs and I a living social deal for a bike rental along the Detroit river. Also comes with an ice cream :)
